August 23, 2020 - Outdoor Worship Service

Thanks for joining us for this week’s Outdoor Worship service at 9:30am in the field behind the parking lot. Below is a link to the Worship Guide pdf. We won’t have any hard copies available, so make sure to download it or print it out for yourself in advance.

The service will be available to stream on Facebook Live or by visiting wrclive.org. Facebook may prompt you to login or create an account, but you can bypass the window and watch anyway, even if you don’t have a Facebook account.

August 16, 2020 - Outdoor Worship

Thanks for joining us for this week’s worship service!  As you gather this morning, take a moment to notice God’s creation around you.  Give thanks to God for what you see, hear, smell, and feel.  Give thanks for the opportunity to gather together again, even in this different way.  Notice God’s presence and welcome God in.

If you are joining us online, the service can be streamed on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at 9:30am at www.wrclive.org. It will also be archived for later viewing.

While we are all overjoyed to be together, please do not neglect our physical distancing guidelines.  Six feet of separation should be maintained between individuals from different households and masks should be worn whenever moving around, singing, or speaking. There are disposable masks and hand sanitizer on the tables in the back if you need either.

If you need to use a restroom, they are available through the Nursery School entrance of the Education Building, near the playground.  Please wear your mask, use the hand sanitizer inside the entrance, limit the number of people using the restroom at one time, wash your hands properly afterwards, and please do not venture into the rest of the building.

Childcare and Sunday School will not be offered this morning.  All children will remain with us in worship.

Bold sections will be read aloud together

* Invites you to rise in body or in spirit

Weeping may endure for a night; but nights are not for ever. Even in the dreary winter the day star lights his lamp. It seems fit that in our nights the dews of grief should fall. When the Bridegroom’s absence makes it dark within, it is meet that the widowed soul should pine for a renewed sight of the Well beloved.
— Charles Spurgeon
Q #125: What does the fourth request mean?
A: Give us today our daily bread means,
Do take care of all our physical needs so that we come to know that you are the only source of everything good, and that neither our work and worry nor your gifts can do us any good without your blessing. And so help us to give up our trust in creatures and to put trust in you alone.
— Heidelberg Catechism

*SONG OF PRAISE

“Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with thee;
thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
as thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Refrain:
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see:
all I have needed thy hand hath provided--
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
join with all nature in manifold witness
to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
Refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Refrain

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL

God of faithful love, we need you. We need your new mercies this morning. All we have, all that we are, is by your hand. Forgive us, for all the ways we forget or deny it. Redeem us, so the outpouring of our life would be extraordinary love and faithfulness toward our neighbor.

*PROMISE OF GRACE

“Yet Not I, But Through Christ In Me”

What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy, my righteousness, and freedom
My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace
To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to His
Oh how strange and divine, I can sing: all is mine
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

The night is dark but I am not forsaken
For by my side, the Savior He will stay
I labor on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need, His power is displayed
To this I hold, my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley He will lead
Oh the night has been won, and I shall overcome
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

No fate I dread, I know I am forgiven
The future sure, the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And He was raised to overthrow the grave
To this I hold, my sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh the chains are released, I can sing: I am free
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

With every breath I long to follow Jesus
For He has said that He will bring me home
And day by day I know He will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne
To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to Him
When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to Him
When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I, but through Christ in me
When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I, but through Christ in me
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

LISTENING TO GOD

Scripture: Ruth 4:1-22

Sermon: HESED
Pastor Andy Kadzban

RESPONDING TO GOD

PSALM 113:5-9

“Who is like the Lord our God,
  who is seated on high,
who looks far down
   on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust,
   and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes,
   with the princes of his people.
He gives the barren woman a home,
   making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the Lord!”

*SONG OF RESPONSE

“Who Is Like the Lord Our God?”

Our Father, He lifts from the ashes
He raises the poor and the lost;
He seats them to dine at his table,
To feast without money or cost.
The lonely he settles in families
The barren, a mother he makes;
O happy the heart of the stranger
Who’s welcomed by this King of Grace.

Refrain:
Who is like the LORD our God? Who with glory fills the sky?
But humbles himself with the broken to dwell. Who is like our God?

Though equal to God in His glory,
Christ Jesus became like a slave;
He humbled himself in obedience
To Death, and the Cross, and the Grave.
Victorious, he rose to the highest;
In glory, the Savior was raised.
His name above all names exalted;
The heavens and earth sing His praise
Refrain

O Saints, fix your eyes on the Savior
And count all your righteousness lost.
Be found in his love and his favor,
And share in his death on the cross.
That all of his power in victory,
Imparted to you, may abound;
And sharing the suff’rings of Jesus,
You share in his glory and crown
Refrain

APOSTLES’ CREED

We join our voices together with Christians throughout the ages and across the world to proclaim these words:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

O Lord, you have been good to us.  We praise you for your righteousness, your mercy and grace. You turn despair into joy, scarcity into abundance, barrenness to fullness. The world aches for you, then, O Lord. The world needs you, Christ. Open your heart to your servants as we lift up our prayer to you:

We pray for nations and peoples suffering under the weight of war, political and environmental oppression, and divisive cultural tensions. Lord, be swift in establishing your shalom. Use your church to bear love, justice, righteousness and reconciliation.

We pray for persons who feel lost and alone, shunned or glorified into isolation. We pray you would give us courage and commitment to open a place at our table, into our hearts that they might be welcomed in and loved.

We pray for our community at Wyckoff Reformed Church--bear us up under the strain of isolation. Lord, we miss the joy and encouragement of being together. Spirit, be diligent in building up our faith and our love for one another, even from afar.

Establish your kingdom, God. Bring you shalom. As we labor and hope for that day, we lift up your own words,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SENT WITH GOD’S BLESSING

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord lift up his presence to you and give you his peace,
Now and always, Amen.
-Numbers 6:24-26

August 9, 2020

Thanks for joining us for this week’s Home Worship!  As you gather, we invite you to take a moment to set up your space differently. Sit at your dining room table or arrange chairs in your living room.  Set out a candle, a bowl, and a small pitcher of water before you.  If you’ve gathered with a group, you can take turns reading and praying so that everyone has a chance to help lead us in worship.  The sections in bold can be read aloud together.

Q: Since then we are redeemed from our sin and misery by grace through Christ without any merit of our own, why must we do good works?
A: Because just as Christ has redeemed us with his blood he also renews us through his Holy Spirit according to his own image, so that with our whole life we may show ourselves grateful to God for his goodness and that he may be glorified through us; and further, so that we ourselves may be assured of our faith by its fruits and by our godly living may win our neighbors to Christ.
— Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 86
Q: What are good works?
A: Only those which are done out of true faith, conform to God’s law, and are done for God’s glory, and not those based on our own opinion or human tradition.
— Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 91

GATHERED BY GOD

WELCOME

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth, Amen.
-Psalm 124:8

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

LIGHTING THE CANDLE

Action: Light a candle

One:   Jesus Christ
All:     is the Light of the World.
One:   The Light shines in the darkness
All:     and the darkness did not overcome it.

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

“Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord;
   I have no good apart from you.’
The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
   you hold my lot.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
   I have a goodly heritage.
I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
   in the night also my heart instructs me.
I keep the Lord always before me;
   because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.”
-Psalm 16:1-2, 5-8

SONG OF PRAISE

“All Thy Fullness”

You are my fullness, firm and steady;
To lavish mercies, at the ready;
Despite my wand'ring, Despite my weakness
Unrelenting strength and goodness

Holy, Holy God almighty
All thy fullness here beside me

You are my courage, truth and wisdom
Guiding hand and purest vision
Hope in fear, joy in victory
endless song, hope and yearning

I am breaking, you are building
I am empty, you are filling
In my silence, you are speaking
In my dying, ever living

Holy, Holy God almighty
All Thy fullness here beside me

Holy, Holy, Alleluia
All Thy fullness here among us

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL

“I love the Lord, for he hears my voice.
He will hear my cry for mercy.
Because he turned his ear to me
I will call on him as long as I live.”
-Psalm 116:1-2

So, we call out to together saying:
Holy and loving God, show us the fullness of your faithfulness in these unsure days. We are weary. Our trust in your steadfast love is fragile. And so, we often choose our own portion; we do not always seek your counsel; we do not keep you always before us. Forgive us, in your mercy. Spirit, come work in us, that we would trust you without exception, and serve you wholeheartedly. In your name we pray, Amen.

PROMISE OF GRACE

Action: Pour water into the bowl and remember your baptism!

“Therefore, my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
   my body also rests secure.
For you do not give me up to Sheol,
   Or let your faithful one see the Pit.
You show me the path of life.
   In your presence there is fullness of joy.
   In your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
-Psalm 16:9-11

SONG OF GRACE

“Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”

Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down;
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, oh, breathe thy loving Spirit
into every troubled breast;
let us all in thee inherit;
let us find thy promised rest.
Take away the love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
end of faith, as its beginning,
set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty to deliver,
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return, and never,
nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee with thy hosts above,
pray and praise thee without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.

Finish, then, thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation
perfectly restored in thee:
changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love and praise.

SONG OF RESPONSE

“Be at Rest (Psalm 116)”

I love the Lord, he heard my voice
He heard my cry for mercy
Because he turned his ear to me
I call upon his name
The cords of death entangled me
The anguish of the grave
When sorrow overcame my soul
I cried “O Lord please save!”

Refrain:
You delivered my soul from death
My eyes from tears
My feet from stumbling, Lord
That I may walk before you Lord my God
As long as I shall live

O how can I repay the Lord
For all the grace he’s shown me?
I’ll lift to him salvation’s cup
And call upon his name
I’ll speak of him with every breath
I’ll do all I have promised
I’ll trust him when affliction comes
And all men let me down
Refrain

How precious in the sight of God
The death of all his saints
Now I am one of them indeed
You’ve freed me from my chains
I’ll praise you for your righteousness
Your mercy and your grace
I’ll gather with the church of God
And I will praise your name
Refrain

Be at rest, O my soul
Be at rest once more
Be at rest, O my soul
For the Lord has been good
For the Lord has been good
For the Lord has been good to you

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

I love the Lord, for he hears my voice.
He will hear my cry for mercy.
Because he turned his ear to me
I will call on him as long as I live.

Lord, we cry out on behalf of our family…

Lord, we cry out on behalf of our neighbors and community groups…

Lord, we cry out on behalf of ours and neighboring churches, who are seeking to serve and guide spiritually and physically…

Lord, we cry out on behalf of the poor and hungry, the outcast and oppressed, for prisoners, refugees, and those differently able…

Lord, we cry out on behalf of the wealthy and full, for the privileged and entitled, for the popular and healthy…

Lord, we cry out for the sick and dying, alone in hospital rooms or unremarkable places outside of the healthcare system…

Lord, we cry out on behalf of our country’s divisive and unsure political landscape…

Lord, we cry out for a hurting and broken world…

We call upon your name: O Lord, save us!
Send us out to join in all this work of restoration and reconciliation!

Let it be that we see you bring the world into your rest. As we wait and hope, holding glimpses of such peace, we lift up the prayer that you taught us, saying,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Q. How does the knowledge of God’s creation and providence help us?
A. We can be patient when things go against us, thankful when things go well, and for the future we can have good confidence in our faithful God and Father that nothing in creation will separate us from his love. For all creatures are so completely in God’s hand that without his will they can neither move nor be moved.

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

Living in the Most High’s shelter,
    camping in the Almighty’s shade,
I say to the Lord,
“You are my refuge, my stronghold!
    You are my God—the one I trust!”

God will save you from the hunter’s trap
    and from deadly sickness.
God will protect you with his pinions;
    you’ll find refuge under his wings.
    His faithfulness is a protective shield.
-Psalm 91:1-4

“Return to the Lord, your God, with all your heart,
   for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love,
   and relents from punishing.
Rend your hearts to the Lord.”
-Joel 2:12-13

Lord, you are our refuge and strength, our shield and defender.  Your steadfast love and faithfulness are everlasting, but Lord, we are prone to wander.  We forget your faithfulness.  We lose sight of your providence. We overlook your abundance.  Forgive us for compartmentalizing our trust and taking things into our own hands.  Give us eyes to see your faithfulness, that we might love You and our neighbor generously.  Let it be so.  Amen.

PROMISE OF GRACE

Action: Pour water into the bowl and remember your baptism!

“Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them. With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation.”
-Psalm 91:14-16

SONG OF GRACE

“He Will Hold Me Fast”

When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast;
When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast.
I could never keep my hold through life's fearful path;
For my love is often cold; He must hold me fast.

Refrain:
He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast;
For my Savior loves me so, He will hold me fast.

Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast;
Precious in his holy sight, He will hold me fast.
He'll not let my soul be lost; His promises shall last;
Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast.
Refrain

For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast;
Justice has been satisfied; He will hold me fast.
Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast
'Till our faith is turned to sight, When He comes at last!
Refrain
