July 26, 2020

Thanks for joining us for this week’s Home Worship!  As you gather, we invite you to take a moment to set up your space differently. Sit at your dining room table or arrange chairs in your living room.  Set out a candle, a bowl, and a small pitcher of water before you.  If you’ve gathered with a group, you can take turns reading and praying so that everyone has a chance to help lead us in worship.  The sections in bold can be read aloud together.

Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

GATHERED BY GOD

WELCOME

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth, Amen.
-Psalm 124:8

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

LIGHTING THE CANDLE

Action: Light a candle

One:   Jesus Christ
All:     is the Light of the World.
One:   The Light shines in the darkness
All:     and the darkness did not overcome it.

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

“Praise the Lord!
Praise, O servants of the Lord;
   praise the name of the Lord.

Blessed be the name of the Lord
   from this time on and for evermore.
From the rising of the sun to its setting
   the name of the Lord is to be praised.
The Lord is high above all nations,
   and his glory above the heavens.”
-Psalm 113:1-4

SONG OF PRAISE

“Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Come, all who hear; brothers and sisters, draw near,
join me in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things is wondrously reigning,
sheltering you under his wings, oh, so gently sustaining.
Have you not seen all that is needful has been
sent by his gracious ordaining?

Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you;
surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do
as with his love he befriends you.

Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again.
Gladly forever adore him!

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL

O Lord, you reign in glory over all things. In Christ, we have seen your glory, full of grace and truth. By your truth we come to see our sin. We come to know our poverty of righteousness, our desperate need of your grace. Have mercy on us and forgive us. Look down, raise us from the dust, and fill us with your joy.  Teach us to trust your steadfast love, no matter the circumstance, and to return that love to you and our neighbor.  In the name of Jesus, we pray, amen.

PROMISE OF GRACE

Action: Pour water into the bowl and remember your baptism!

Who is like the Lord our God,
who is seated on high,
who looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust,
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the Lord!
— Psalm 113:5-9

SONG OF GRACE

“Who is Like the Lord, Our God? (Psalm 113)”

Our Father, He lifts from the ashes
He raises the poor and the lost;
He seats them to dine at his table,
To feast without money or cost.
The lonely he settles in families
The barren, a mother he makes;
O happy the heart of the stranger
Who’s welcomed by this King of Grace.

Refrain:
Who is like the LORD our God?
Who with glory fills the sky?
But humbles himself with the broken to dwell
Who is like our God?

Though equal to God in His glory,
Christ Jesus became like a slave;
He humbled himself in obedience
To Death, and the Cross, and the Grave.
Victorious, he rose to the highest;
In glory, the Savior was raised.
His name above all names exalted;
The heavens and earth sing His praise
Refrain

O Saints, fix your eyes on the Savior
And count all your righteousness lost.
Be found in his love and his favor,
And share in his death on the cross.
That all of his power in victory,
Imparted to you, may abound;
And sharing the suff’rings of Jesus,
You share in his glory and crown
Refrain x2

DISCUSSION

What did you hear?

What are you going to do about it this week?

RESPONDING TO GOD

APOSTLES’ CREED

We join our voices together with Christians throughout the ages and across the world to proclaim these words:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

We praise and thank you, O Lord, that you have fed us with your Word. Grateful for your gifts and mindful of the communion of your saints, we offer to you our prayers for all people.

God of compassion, we remember before you the poor and the afflicted, the sick and the dying, prisoners and all who are lonely, the victims of war, injustice, and inhumanity, and all others who suffer from whatever their sufferings may be called. [Silence]

O Lord of providence holding the destiny of the nations in your hand, we pray for our country. Inspire the hearts and minds of our leaders that they, together with all our nation, may first seek your kingdom and righteousness so that order, liberty, and peace may dwell with your people. [Silence]

O God the Creator, we pray for all nations and peoples. Take away the mistrust and lack of understanding that divide your creatures; increase in us the recognition that we are all your children. [Silence]

O Savior God, look upon your church in its struggle upon the earth. Have mercy on its weakness, bring to an end its unhappy divisions, and scatter its fears. Look also upon the ministry of your church. Increase its courage, strengthen its faith, and inspire its witness to all people, even to the ends of the earth. [Silence]

Author of grace and God of love, send your Holy Spirit’s blessing to your children here present. Keep our hearts and thoughts in Jesus Christ, your Son, our only Savior, who has taught us to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

SONG OF RESPONSE

“Psalm 126”

Our mouths they were filled, filled with laughter
Our tongues they were loosed, loosed with joy
Restore us, O Lord
Restore us, O Lord

Refrain:
Although we are weeping, Lord, help us keep sowing
The seeds of Your Kingdom For the day You will reap them
Your sheaves we will carry, Lord, please do not tarry
All those who sow weeping Will go out with songs of joy

The nations will say, "He has done great things!"
The nations will sing songs of joy
Restore us, O Lord
Restore us, O Lord
Refrain

SENT WITH GOD’S BLESSING

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord lift up his presence to you and give you his peace,
Now and always, Amen.
-Numbers 6:24-26

July 19, 2020 - Outdoor Worship

Thanks for joining us for this week’s worship service!  We’re experimenting with an outdoor service as we explore our steps forward through this pandemic.  As you gather this morning, take a moment to notice God’s creation around you.  Give thanks to God for what you see, hear, smell, and feel.  Give thanks for the opportunity to gather together again, even in this different way.  Notice God’s presence and welcome God in.

If you are joining us online, the service can be streamed on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at 9:30am at www.wrclive.org. It will also be archived for later viewing.

While we are all overjoyed to be together, please do not neglect our physical distancing guidelines.  Six feet of separation should be maintained between individuals from different households and masks should be worn at all times, even while singing. There are disposable masks and hand sanitizer on the tables in the back if you need either.

If you need to use a restroom, they are available through the Nursery School entrance of the Education Building, near the playground.  Please wear your mask, use the hand sanitizer inside the entrance, limit the number of people using the restroom at one time, wash your hands properly afterwards, and please do not venture into the rest of the building.

Childcare and Sunday School will not be offered this morning.  All children will remain with us in worship.

Bold sections will be read aloud together

* Invites you to rise in body or in spirit

Action: Light a candle

One:   Jesus Christ
All:     is the Light of the World.
One:   The Light shines in the darkness
All:     and the darkness did not overcome it.

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
   Worship the Lord with gladness;
   come into his presence with singing.

Know that the Lord is God.
   It is he that made us, and we are his;
   we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
   and his courts with praise.
   Give thanks to him, bless his name.

For the Lord is good;
   his steadfast love endures for ever,
   and his faithfulness to all generations.
-Psalm 100

SONG OF PRAISE

“All Creatures of Our God and King”

All creatures of our God and King,
lift up your voice and with us sing:
alleluia, alleluia!
O burning sun with golden beam,
and shining moon with silver gleam,
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

O rushing wind so wild and strong,
white clouds that sail in heaven along,
alleluia, alleluia!
New rising dawn in praise rejoice;
you lights of evening find a voice:
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

All you who are of tender heart,
forgiving others, take your part;
alleluia, alleluia!
All you who pain and sorrow bear,
praise God and on him cast your care:
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Let all things their Creator bless,
and worship him in humbleness,
alleluia, alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
and praise the Spirit, Three in One:
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL

“Know that the Lord is God.
   It is he that made us, and we are his;
   we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”

You, O Lord, show us your majesty in the heavens and your humility in taking on flesh in Jesus. We admit that we often forget that you are God, not the circumstances of our day, not the power we scrape and claw for, not the fear and shame that displace our identity. Speak to us, show us, that you have made us, that we belong, mind, body and soul to our faithful savior Jesus Christ. Forgive us, Lord.  Compel and empower us to live as your people, the sheep of your good pasture, that by our lives we might join creation in declaring your glory.  In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

PROMISE OF GRACE

Action: Pour water into the bowl and remember your baptism!

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

We praise you, God our creator, for your handiwork in shaping and sustaining your wondrous creation. For the glory of the universe held together in your hand, and for our small but vital place within it as your image-bearers.

We especially thank you for

the miracle of life and the wonder of living . . .
the resources of the earth . . .
gifts of creative vision and skillful craft . . .
the treasure stored in every human life. . . .
particular blessings coming to us in this day . . .

We pray for others, God our Savior, claiming your love in Jesus Christ for the whole world and committing ourselves to care for those around us in his name.

We especially pray for

those who work for the benefit of others . . .
those who serve in positions of authority . . .
those who teach and those who learn . . .
people who are poor . . .
the church in persecution. . . .

God our creator, everything that is holds together in you, and you have placed all of it at the feet of your son Jesus. May His rule become evident through the power of Your Holy Spirit, and may we come to serve His Kingdom for Your glory. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, who taught us to pray, saying:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

SENDING SONG

“O For a Thousand Tongues”

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of His grace

He breaks the power of canceled sin
He sets the prisoner free
His blood can make the foulest clean
His blood availed for me

Refrain:
O for a thousand tongues to sing
O for a thousand years to praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of His grace
My great Redeemer's name

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb
Your loosened tongues employ
Ye blind, behold your Savior come
And leap, ye lame, for joy
Refrain

Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given
By saints below and saints above
The church in earth and heaven

We believe that this good God, after creating all things, did not abandon them to chance or fortune but leads and governs them according to his holy will, in such a way that nothing happens in this world without God’s orderly arrangement.

Yet God is not the author of, and cannot be charged with, the sin that occurs. For God’s power and goodness are so great and incomprehensible that God arranges and does his works very well and justly even when the devils and the wicked act unjustly.

We do not wish to inquire with undue curiosity into what God does that surpasses human understanding and is beyond our ability to comprehend. But in all humility and reverence we adore the just judgments of God, which are hidden from us, being content to be Christ’s disciples, so as to learn only what God shows us in the Word, without going beyond those limits.

This doctrine gives us unspeakable comfort since it teaches us that nothing can happen to us by chance but only by the arrangement of our gracious heavenly Father, who watches over us with fatherly care, sustaining all creatures under his lordship, so that not one of the hairs on our heads (for they are all numbered) nor even a little bird can fall to the ground without the will of our Father.

In this thought we rest, knowing that God holds in check the devils and all our enemies, who cannot hurt us without divine permission and will.

For that reason we reject the damnable error of the Epicureans, who say that God does not get involved in anything and leaves everything to chance.

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

How lovely is your dwelling place,
    Lord Almighty!
My soul yearns, even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.
Even the sparrow has found a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may have her young—a place near your altar,
    Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
    they are ever praising you.
— Psalm 84:1-4

SONG OF PRAISE

“Better is One Day”

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty.
For my soul longs and even faints for you.
For here my heart is satisfied, within your presence.
I sing beneath the shadow of your wings.

Refrain:
Better is one day in your courts,
better is one day in your house,
better is one day in your courts than thousands elsewhere.
Better is one day in your courts,
better is one day in your house,
better is one day in your courts than thousands elsewhere,
than thousands elsewhere.

One thing I ask and I would seek: to see your beauty,
to find you in the place your glory dwells.
One thing I ask and I would seek: to see your beauty,
To find you in the place your glory dwells.
Refrain

Bridge:
My heart and flesh cry out
for you, the living god;
your Spirit's water to my soul.
I've tasted and I've seen,
come once again to me;
I will draw near to you,
I will draw near to you.
Refrain

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL

Living God, our heart and flesh cry out to you. Come, once again, to us in our weakness and hear our prayer:
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

PROMISE OF GRACE

Action: Pour water into the bowl and remember your baptism!

The Lord is merciful and gracious,
   slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always accuse,
   nor will he keep his anger for ever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
   nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
   so great is his steadfast love towards those who honor him;
as far as the east is from the west,
   so far he removes our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion for his children,
   so the Lord has compassion for those who honor him.
— Psalm 103:8-13

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Holy and merciful God, you created the heavens and the earth and everything under the earth and have sustained it, nurtured it by your loving hand. You see the world, our community, our church, and all of its needs. Come Lord Jesus, and meet all of them with your mercy and grace. Come and reconcile all things into flourishing.

This day we offer back to you Psalm 84:
O Lord God of hosts, hear our prayer;
   give ear, O God of Jacob!

For all who feel alienated and alone, for all who ache for shelter from fixed systems of justice; for all those wandering in anxiety or doubt, fear or resentment, do not abandon them to despair. By your provision and care, bring comfort. For all who long for joy to return to their hearts and overflow from their lips, we pray You bring them to Your dwelling place.

For all who feel small, unseen, unknown, for all who seem powerless and vulnerable, we pray they find shelter in your presence. We pray their offerings of praise declare your goodness and faithfulness and tell of your mighty hand and gentle mercy.

Grow in us unyielding strength and a heart that delights in your Word. Equip this worshipping body to witness to the Living Water and so become pools of water in a desolate landscape. From our hearts may rivers of living water flow.

O Lord God of hosts, hear our prayer;
   give ear, O God of Jacob!
Our sun and shield;
   bestow favor and honor upon us.
As we seek to walk faithfully, do not withhold your goodness from us.

We close by offering together the prayer Jesus taught us to pray, saying,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

SENDING SONG

“Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”

Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down;
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, oh, breathe thy loving Spirit
into every troubled breast;
let us all in thee inherit;
let us find thy promised rest.
Take away the love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
end of faith, as its beginning,
set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty to deliver,
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return, and never,
nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee with thy hosts above,
pray and praise thee without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.

Finish, then, thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation
perfectly restored in thee:
changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love and praise.

SENT WITH GOD’S BLESSING

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord lift up his presence to you and give you his peace,

    Lord Almighty!
My soul yearns, even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.
Even the sparrow has found a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
    Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
    they are ever praising you.”
-Psalm 84:1-4

SONG OF PRAISE

“Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing”

As the deer longs for the water
So my soul longs after you
Why, O Lord, have you forgotten?
Will I see your face again?
O my soul why are you downcast?
Why disquieted within?
Hope in God, my help and savior
For I shall praise Him again

Come, thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount— I’m fixed upon it—
mount of God’s unchanging love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I’ve come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.

Oh, to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace now like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee:
prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it;
seal it for thy courts above.

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

PROMISE OF GRACE

Action: Pour water into the bowl and remember your baptism!

Through Jesus Christ forgiveness of sins
 is proclaimed to you.
 In Christ we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses,
 according to the riches of his grace.
-From Acts 13:38, Ephesians 1:7

“My Hope is Built”

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

Refrain:
On Christ the solid rock I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.
Refrain

His oath His covenant and His blood
Support me in the 'whelming flood:
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
Refrain

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless we stand before His throne.
Refrain

OFFERING

We respond to the love and grace of Jesus by giving back our whole lives to God in worship. In this offering, we give our financial gifts as a symbol that all we have comes from God and is to be used for God’s glory. Even though we aren’t worshiping together, our ministry still continues!  Please continue to support us!

DOXOLOGY

May be spoken or sung

Use space following each ellipsis to offer your own prayer silent or aloud, before speaking together the words in bold.

O God, in your we find fullness and wholeness. In you resides mercy and grace, righteousness and justice. With all our heart and with all our mind, let us we pray to you, saying "Lord, have mercy."

For the peace of the world, the unity of all peoples, and the fortitude of the church, let us pray to the Lord…
Lord, have mercy.

For the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, and for the sick and the suffering, let us pray to the Lord…
Lord, have mercy.

For the poor and the oppressed, for the unemployed and the destitute, for prisoners and captives, and for all who remember and care for them, let us pray to the Lord…
Lord, have mercy.

For the good earth which God has given us, and for the wisdom and will to conserve it, let us pray to the Lord…
Lord, have mercy.

Almighty God, as we hope and work in your name, we offer up the prayer you taught us saying,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

SENDING SONG

“All Thy Fullness”

You are my fullness, firm and steady;
To lavish mercies, at the ready;
Despite my wand'ring, Despite my weakness
Unrelenting strength and goodness

Holy, Holy God almighty
All thy fullness here beside me

You are my courage, truth and wisdom
Guiding hand and purest vision
Hope in fear, joy in victory
endless song, hope and yearning

I am breaking, you are building
I am empty, you are filling
In my silence, you are speaking
In my dying, ever living

Holy, Holy God almighty
All Thy fullness here beside me

Holy, Holy, Alleluia
All Thy fullness here among us

SENT WITH GOD’S BLESSING

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord lift up his presence to you and give you his peace,
Now and always, Amen.
-Numbers 6:24-26
