Thanks for joining us for this week’s Home Worship!  As you gather, we invite you to take a moment to set up your space differently. Sit at your dining room table or arrange chairs in your living room.  Set out a candle, a bowl, and a small pitcher of water before you.  If you’ve gathered with a group, you can take turns reading and praying so that everyone has a chance to help lead us in worship.  The sections in bold can be read aloud together.

Jesus understood that lament was the only true response of faith to the brokenness and fallenness of the world. It provides the only trustworthy bridge to God across the deep seismic quaking of our lives.
— Michael Card

GATHERED BY GOD

WELCOME

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth, Amen.
-Psalm 124:8

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

LIGHTING THE CANDLE

Action: Light a candle

One:   Jesus Christ
All:     is the Light of the World.
One:   The Light shines in the darkness
All:     and the darkness did not overcome it.

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

“The Lord is king; let the peoples tremble!
   He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
The Lord is great in Zion;
   he is exalted over all the peoples.
Let them praise your great and awesome name.
   Holy is he!Mighty King, lover of justice,
   you have established equity;
you have executed justice
   and righteousness in Jacob.
Extol the Lord our God;
   worship at his footstool.
   Holy is he!”
-Psalm 99:1-5

SONG OF PRAISE

“Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty”

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee;
holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea;
holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

PROMISE OF GRACE

Action: Pour water into the bowl and remember your baptism!

“He Will Hold Me Fast”

When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast;
When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast.
I could never keep my hold through life's fearful path;
For my love is often cold; He must hold me fast.

Refrain:
He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast;
For my Savior loves me so, He will hold me fast.

Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast;
Precious in his holy sight, He will hold me fast.
He'll not let my soul be lost; His promises shall last;
Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast.
Refrain

For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast;
Justice has been satisfied; He will hold me fast.
Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast
'Till our faith is turned to sight, When He comes at last!
Refrain

RESPONDING TO GOD

SONG OF RESPONSE

“We Wait In Hope For the Lord”

We wait in Hope for the Lord
He is our strength and our shield
In him our hearts rejoice
For we trust in his holy name

APOSTLES’ CREED

We join our voices together with Christians throughout the ages and across the world to proclaim these words:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

We want to invite you to write your own lament.  This can be a project for your whole house.  Spend a few minutes now writing a lament, using the following structure, and then pray it together now and during the week to come.  Psalms of Lament almost always follow this structure:

·      Invocation/Address – Who are you praying to? What has God done in the past that justifies praying to God in this situation?

·      Complaint – What is wrong in the world or in your life?

·      Expression of Trust – Why do you trust God with this prayer? Do you?

·      Petition – What do you want God to do?

·      Praise – All lament is offered in the context of praise to God who hears these prayers and, in God’s own time, answers them.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

SENDING SONG

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

O God, you are my God, I seek you,
my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
   beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
   my lips will praise you.

So I will bless you as long as I live;
   I will lift up my hands and call on your name.
-Psalm 63:1-4

SONG OF PRAISE

“All Creatures of Our God and King”

All creatures of our God and King,
lift up your voice with us and sing: alleluia, alleluia!
O burning sun with golden beam,
and shining moon with silver gleam,
O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

O rushing wind so wild and strong,
white clouds that sail in heaven along, alleluia, alleluia!
New rising dawn in praise rejoice;
you lights of evening find a voice:
O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

All you who are of tender heart,
forgiving others, take your part; alleluia, alleluia!
All you who pain and sorrow bear,
praise God and on him cast your care:
O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Let all things their Creator bless,
and worship him in humbleness, alleluia, alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
and praise the Spirit, Three in One:
O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL

O God, have mercy on us.
Restore us again, O God of our salvation. Our souls thirst for you, our flesh faints. Apart from you we have no good thing. Restore our hearts to receive your peace. Open our ears to hear your voice in the midst of upheaval and outrage. We need your balm of healing and reconciliation.

By your hand, may steadfast love and faithfulness meet in our witness, righteousness and peace kiss as we greet our neighbors. Let faithfulness spring up from the ground and righteousness look down from the sky.

Let it be so, Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
   for he will speak peace to his people,
   to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
So we turn to you Lord, hear our prayer:

O God, source of love and compassion in the suffering of all your children, we offer our compassion also for the hungry and the sick in body, mind, or heart; the depressed and the lonely; all living in fear and under stress; stricken in grief; the unemployed and the rejected; those burning with hatred; and those whose cries for justice in a broken world were renewed this week.

Let steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
   Let righteousness and peace kiss each other.
Let faithfulness spring up from the ground,
   and righteousness look down from the sky.
Give what is good, O God.

As we stand in hope and expectation of Your faithfulness, we offer the prayer you taught us to pray, saying,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Half the harm that is done in this world
Is due to people who want to feel important.
They don’t mean to do harm—but the harm does not interest them.
Or they do not see it, or they justify it
Because they are absorbed in the endless struggle
To think well of themselves.
— T.S. Eliot
Bombarded with poll results about declining levels of church attendance and belief in God, we assume that more and more people are abandoning faith and making their own meaning. But what these polls actually tell us is more straightforward. They tell us that confidence in the religious narratives we’ve inherited has collapsed. What they fail to report is that the marketplace in replacement religion is booming. We may be sleeping in on Sunday mornings in greater numbers, but we’ve never been more pious. Religious observance hasn’t faded apace ‘secularization’ so much as migrated—and we’ve got the anxiety to prove it. We’re seldom not in church.

“The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love. We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.”
-Psalm 33:18, 20-22

SONG OF PRAISE

“My Hope is Built”

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

Refrain:
On Christ the solid rock I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.
Refrain

His oath His covenant and His blood
Support me in the 'whelming flood:
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
Refrain

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless we stand before His throne.
Refrain

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL

God of hope, we long for rest and rejoicing in these troubled days. We are weak and heavy laden and our trust is easily fractured. In our sin, you are not always our chosen portion; we do not always seek your counsel; we do not keep you always before us. Forgive us, in your mercy. Spirit, come work in us, to turn again to you, to trust you without exception, and serve you wholeheartedly.

PROMISE OF GRACE

Action: Pour water into the bowl and remember your baptism!

“Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
   my body also rests secure.
For you do not give me up to Sheol,

You show me the path of life.”

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

“Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord;
   I have no good apart from you.’” (from Psalm 16:1-2)

Lord, our community, our nation, our world stand in desperate need of your refuge and healing, your mercy and grace, your justice and peace. Here us as we pray:

When we’re down and helpless, when lies are reigning, when fear and indifference are growing,
may your kingdom come.

When joy is missing, when love is missing, and unbelief is growing,
may your kingdom come.

To those who are sick and lonely, to those who are imprisoned and tortured,
may your kingdom come.

Into the churches, into our praying, into our singing,
may your kingdom come.

Into our hearts, into our hands, into our eyes,
may your kingdom come.

Lord, we want to be close to you.  Until the day you make your home among us again and your kingdom is fully established, we lift up the words you taught us saying,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.

The first language of the church in a deeply broken world is not strategy, but prayer. The journey of reconciliation is grounded in a call to see and encounter the rupture of this world so truthfully that we are literally slowed down. We are called to a space where any explanation or action is too easy, too fast, too shallow—a space where the right response can only be a desperate cry directed to God. We are called to learn the anguished cry of lament.
— Emmanuel Katongole and Chris Rice, “Reconciling All Things”, p 77.

GATHERED BY GOD

WELCOME

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth, Amen.
-Psalm 124:8

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

LIGHTING THE CANDLE

Action: Light a candle

One:   Jesus Christ
All:     is the Light of the World.
One:   The Light shines in the darkness,
All:     and the darkness did not overcome it.

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

Based on Romans 5:1-5
“Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God.  And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”

In the shadow of God’s peace,
in the powerful name of Jesus,
and with the hope of the Holy Spirit, let us worship God.

SONG OF PRAISE

“Trinity Song”

Holy Father, Son and Spirit
Holy Communion, Three-in-one.

Come with your peace,
With your invitation
Bind us together in Holy love.

PRAYER FOR RENEWAL AND LAMENT

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, have mercy upon us.

Restore us again, O God of our salvation. Will you not revive us again, so that your people may rejoice in you? Rise up, O Lord, show us your steadfast love and grant us your salvation.
We sing...

Turn our hearts to you so we can receive your peace. Open our ears to hear you speaking in the upheaval and outrage. Your word says, surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him that your glory may dwell in our land. Come and dwell here. We need your balm of healing and reconciliation. Come Holy Spirit and work in the hearts across the nations, work in the words and hands of your church.
We sing...

Let us see steadfast love and faithfulness meet, righteousness and peace kiss each other. Let our faithfulness spring up from the ground and your righteousness rain down from the sky.
Restore us again, O God of our salvation. Revive us again so that we may rejoice in you.
We sing...

RESPONDING TO GOD

SONG OF RESPONSE

“How Long?”

How long? Will You turn Your face away?
How long? Do You hear us when we pray?
On and on, still we walk this pilgrim way - How long?

How long 'til Your children find their rest?
How long 'til You draw them to Your breast?
We go on holding to Your promises - How long?

Refrain:
'Til You wipe away the tears from every eye
'Til we see our home descending from the sky
Do we wait in vain?
Jesus, give us hope again!

How long 'til Your word will still the storm?
How long 'til You bare Your mighty arm?
How we groan 'til You snatch us from the thorns - How long?

How long? Sweet the dawn that ends the race.
How long? Weak our hearts but strong our legs.
Looking on - great that cloud of witnesses! How long?

Amen.

SENT WITH GOD’S BLESSING

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord lift up his presence to you and give you his peace,
Now and always, Amen.
-Numbers 6:24-26
